Hello there and thanks for visiting WoolYWhimsy. I am Susie Walker and I love fiber. I really really do! My studio is located in Portland, Oregon, one of the fairest cities in the world.
Even as a child I adored textiles. Not clothing necessarily, but cloth and what it could be made of; banana fiber, palm, wood bark and the usual. Oh what colors could dance on those fibers! I suppose growing up in the Philippines and Japan where creating cloth is an ancient artistic treasure contributed to this love.
Working with silk, wool and cotton is a true delight. Wool: What can't you do with wool? Incredibly malleable, sustainable stuff! So fun to needle felt dragons and critters and sculpt wonky shapes. Or create cloth for wearables. I don't think I've ever felt anything softer than Italian Merino wool. I could almost (almost) wish winter stayed year round just so I could wear this kind of wool all the time. Silk: Drawing on silk noil is an exquisite delight. The texture of the nubbiness and the creamy soft hue makes for an excellent substrate with fabric paints. I am experimenting with creating pictures on raw silk cuffs. Perfect accessories for any time of year. I am also thinking of dyeing summer scarves and printing designs on this lovely stuff. Cotton: Cotton gauze seems so delicate as it wafts in the summer breeze. It's deceptive because once nuno felted with Merino, Polwarth or Blue Face Leicester, it is one strong but feather weight fabric. I look forward to working on more projects with it.
